Keynote Speech: Learn2Analyse: Educational Data Literacy for the Open Classroom Teacher
Prof. Demetrios Sampson has received a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece in 1989 and a Ph.D. in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Essex, UK in 1995. Currently is a Professor of Digital Systems for Learning and Education at the Department of Digital Systems, University of Piraeus, Greece where he serves as Academic Staff since 2003. In the past, he has also served as a Professor in numerous universities and research institutes across the globe.
His research expertise is in the fields of Learning Technologies and Digital Learning, demonstrating a significant scientific impact as he is listed at the top 20 researchers globally in the field of Learning Technologies based on Google Scholar citations (February 2019). He is the co-author of 375 articles in scientific books, journals and conferences, and the editor of 13 books, 33 special issues and 37 international conference proceedings, with more than 5335 citations and h-index 34 as listed in Scholar Google. He has received 10 times Best Paper Award in International Conferences on Learning Technologies. He has been a Keynote/Invited Speaker/Lecturer in 85 International/National Conferences and/or Postgraduate Programs around the world. He has been project director, principle investigator and/or research consultant in 70 Research and Innovation projects with external funding at the range of 16 Million€. He has supervised 155 honours and postgraduate students to successful completion.
Prof. Sampson has developed the first Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on the use of Educational Data Analytics by School Teachers, in the world, offered by the edX platform (a Harvard and MIT led global initiative) which has attracted more than 15000 participants from 160 countries around the world since October 2016.
He is a pioneer of open access movement to research dissemination by serving as Editor-in-Chief of one of the first open access journals in educational technology, the Educational Technology & Society Journal (2003-2018). The journal is currently ranked as #5 in Scholar Google Top Publications in Educational Technology (February 2019). He has also served or serves as Member of the Steering Committee and/or Advisory and/or Editorial Board of 26 International/National Journals, in various leadership roles in 77 International Conferences and at the Program Committee of 550 International/National Conferences.
He is the recipient of the IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Service Award (July 2012) and named a Golden Core Member of IEEE Computer Society in recognition of his contribution to the field of Learning Technologies.
He is also the recipient of the Golden Nikola Tesla Chain Award of the International Society for Engineering Pedagogy (IGIP) for “International outstanding achievements in the field of Engineering Pedagogy” (September 2018).
